The catalog raisonné of drawings by the sculptor Hans Uhlmann includes over 1000 items; some drawings accompanied the conception of his sculptures, but a large number of them were designed as autonomous pictorial works. From 1958 on, Uhlmann preferred to use black synthetic chalk and worked exclusively abstractly. Angular, sharply outlined forms push themselves into the pictorial space, sometimes filled with deep black, sometimes with jagged lines, like records of electrical oscillations.
